The Joystream protocol is a content-zce platform specification that attempts to be managed and operated by platform users. At the heart of the protocol is a shared platform state that is implemented on top of a blockchain consensus system that coordinates and provides incentives to all stakeholders. Almost every aspect of the platform is native to the protocol, and every subsystem is entirely the responsibility of the user.

Jsgenesis is the company and legal entity initially responsible for building and developing the Joystream platform. Jsgenesis is a limited company registered in Norway. Currently, it consists of four full-time members on three different continents. Right now, our two main focuses are developing the protocol, and building the team to execute it.

To explain why we chose to separate the two, we first have to tell you a bit about Joystream's vision. For the less technically inclined, a quick and complicated way of defining runtime is simply the way a program executes and behaves. For Substrate-based blockchains like Joystream, the initial runtime is part of the genesis block of the WASM image. This means that when a validator produces a block, it must follow all the rules defined in the runtime, otherwise it will be rejected by other validators and nodes on the network.

In our founding runtime, we included two mechanisms to allow upgrades:

The sudo.key address can be found by visiting the testnet UI settings and changing to the Fully featured interface. Then, Chain state is accessed from the sidebar, Sudo is selected from the selected state query drop-down menu, and the + button to the right is clicked. We control the private key corresponding to this address in Jsgenesis, allowing us to force changes. This feature will be removed when the platform goes live on mainnet, or shortly after the transition period. Even now, we intend to use it as little as possible.

To vote on a new runtime, a proposal must first be submitted to the council. If the recommendation reaches the voting_period within the approval_quorum, the recommendation run upgrade is automatically deployed to the network. In future testnets and mainnets, some additional checks and balances will be implemented depending on which parameters of the consensus code change.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect is that a successful runtime upgrade can introduce new rules and mechanisms for future runtime changes.

In the future, we plan to build a module where this WASM image is compiled locally on each validator machine and verifies that the checksum matches the voted proposal. This will provide additional security as it can be proven deterministically that each validator's code is the same and matches the proposal's code. Therefore, confirm all the tests and double-check the platform that the software developer has done.

Assuming the sudo transaction actually works, or after the proposal is passed by the council, the new runtime will be stored on-chain. In the next block, all generated blocks must follow the new consensus rules contained in the new runtime to avoid being invalidated and thus forked.
