DIA is set up as a hybrid system of off-chain components with data storage and processing, providing data sources for on-chain component financial smart contracts. Currently, Ethereum is used as a smart contract platform due to its wide range of uses and technical quality, but the DIA system is not limited to one blockchain technology.

For collecting financial data, we use a centralized backend that runs collectors for all types of financial data. All collected data is processed by a database setup that includes a stream-oriented kafka instance and a key-value store for faster access to some intermediate results.

These collectors are divided into different categories:

Exchange Scrapers: Collect data on cryptocurrencies and other assets such as stocks, futures, and rare earth metals from exchanges. Each Exchange Scrapers board operates independently and is structured around the trading pair concept used to indicate the trading pair asset used in the transaction. For example, a transaction from Bitcoin to USD is stored under BTCUSD.

Decentralized Finance Scrapers: We collect data on decentralized exchanges, lending platforms, and other public forms of DeFi.

Blockchain Scrapers: These scrapers are used to determine the properties of the blockchain. These scrapers periodically update the backend with information about their data. Blockchain Scrapers run as independently manageable Docker containers. Typically, they collect gigabytes of data over time (they're dealing with a growing blockchain), so should be managed in a separate fashion, not directly in the database executable.

Quote Scrapers: Used to collect official quotes from a central trusted provider. In addition to the European Central Bank's (ECB) daily exchange rates for various international currencies, we also collect several interbank overnight rates such as SOFR and €STR.
